About Us

One of the many definitions of "Prodigal" in the dictionary is "one who gives of themselves in an excessive manner”, which is precisely what a Service Dog does.

Prodigal Service Dogs is a small independent training organization which offers an alternative to the large scale Service Dog Organizations. Independent training means maximum flexibility to suit the specific needs of the client. If there is a negative side to it, it is that the number of dogs trained and teams paired is correspondingly limited.

We are proud to be nationally certified by the American Society of Canine Trainers. This organization demonstrates excellence as its hallmark, and that carries on through to our training. Tom has progressed up through the certification levels with ASCT to certify in the following: Handler, Master Handler, Senior Master Handler, Civilian Service Dog Trainer Level 1, Civilian Service Dog Trainer Level 2, and Civilian Service Dog Master Trainer. Tom is also a CGC Evaluator for the AKC.

The importance of a dog to do its respective job in a competent manner, be it law enforcement, search and rescue, bomb detection, or, in our case, assistance, cannot be overstated. Excellence in our training translates to independence in the lives of those with disabilities.

Our ultimate goal is to match people with disabilities to dogs which possess the breed characteristics and capabilities to best suit their needs. This is a lengthy and intricate process which culminates in a handler/dog team, and which entails a great deal of involvement from both members of the team. To be partnered with a dog requires of the handler a commitment and a willingness to learn a broad range of concepts including: training methodology, dog psychology, the physical and mental parameters of the dog, and caring for it's health and welfare.
